Linda Vilhjálmsdóttir

Linda Vilhjálmsdóttir was born on June 1, 1958, in Reykjavík and grew up in Seltjarnarnes. She trained as a nursing assistant and worked in that field for many years alongside her writing.

Linda’s poems have appeared in newspapers, magazines, and anthologies since 1982. Her first poetry collection, Bláþráður (Blue Thread), was published in 1990. All nine of her poetry book were featured in a collection published in 2024. In 2003 she published the autobiographical novel Lygasaga (A Story of Lies). She wrote the script for the movie Líf eftir dauðann (Life after death) with Vera Sölvadóttir for RÚV, The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service. Plays and poetic works by her have been staged at Borgarleikhúsið (Reykjavík City Theatre) and Kaffileikhúsið.

Linda has established herself among the foremost Icelandic poets with her poetry collections, which have received significant recognition, awards, and strong critical reviews.

She was one of seven young poets who participated in the poetry performance “Fellibylurinn Gloría” (Hurricane Gloria), which was released on cassette in 1985. Her poems were also exhibited at Kjarvalsstaðir in April 1993. She has participated in many literary and poetry festivals in Iceland and abroad, and her poems have been published in numerous magazines and anthologies around the world.

In 1993, Linda received the DV Cultural Award for her poetry book Klakabörnin. In 2018 she received an award at the European Poets of Freedom Festival in Gdańsk, Poland, for her poetry collection Frelsi (Freedom).

In 2023 she was the featured poet (Sónarskáld) of the annual journal Són, a magazine dedicated to poetry and poetics, where she published three new, previously unpublished poems.
